Catholic Charities Immigration Services — Springdale recently received a grant from the Denver Foundation to help children receive citizenship through Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS). To qualify, a child must be: an immigrant; younger than 18; living with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or without any immigration status at all; and live with only one biological parent or without both biological parents (Minors with a stepfather or a stepmother could still qualify.). Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) at the Diocese of Little Rock awards a limited number of small grants to provide financial assistance to organizations whose efforts are aimed at serving the needs of low-income people. Projects eligible for funding can either be direct service-oriented, or aimed at institutional change. Grants between $200 and $2,000 are awarded for the fiscal year July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018. These grants help Catholics meet a wide range of needs within their local communities while assisting parishes in being a Catholic charity. ... More
On the evening of Saturday, Oct. 14, a disastrous fire occurred at one of the apartment buildings of the Queens Manor Apartments in Mayflower. Of suspicious origin, the fire spread quickly to a number of apartments. Nearly 50 residents were driven from their homes without warning, with only the clothes on their backs. Immediately, Mayflower’s mayor and school superintendent set up a temporary shelter in the town’s elementary school. "Born in Kennett, Missouri March 12, 1958 to Edward and Christina (Kordsmeier) Hart, he attended St. Theresa Elementary School and Catholic High School, (both in) Little Rock. After graduation from the University of Dallas, he was assigned to the North American College in Rome, where he earned his licentiate in sacred theology in 1985, the year after he was ordained to the sacred priesthood in the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Little Rock on June 30, 1984. ... The Diocese of Little Rock Hispanic Ministry Office hosted the 26th women's weekend for Encuentros de Promoción Juvenil (EPJ) (Encounters of Youth Promotion) at the Vincentian Lay Mission Center in North Little Rock Nov. 2-5. Twenty women, ages 18-27, attended the four-day encounter, which was led by a team of peers that began planning the weekend in August. "We call it an encounter because it is a lot more than just retreating oneself from our daily life, it allows us to find our self, find God and find our peers' needs," said Bárbara Barroso, EPJ weekend retreat coordinator. ... The fifth annual Catholic Schools Scholarship Appeal will kick off Nov. 11 to assist schools statewide in providing tuition assistance to students who qualify. This year, $3.5 million is needed to provide assistance to 907 students. Parish subsidies and school scholarship funds cover $3.2 million, which leaves a need for $267,141 in donations through this appeal. In a letter to previous donors, Bishop Anthony B. Arkansas Catholic will host an 11-day pilgrimage to see the world-famous Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany, in June 2020. This event only happens every 10 years so tickets are highly coveted. Pilgrims will also visit Austria, Switzerland and Lichtenstein. Father Erik Pohlmeier will be the spiritual director. The cost is $3,939 per person for double occupancy. This includes lodging, breakfast and dinner, entrance fees to scheduled sites but does not include airfare at this time. A $600 deposit is required at the time of registration.
